Island Books has been Newport County's Independent Bookstore for over 30 years. Started by Judy Crosby in 1993, the store has expanded over the years, and survived the covid epidemic. In 2021 the store was sold to Laurie Sutherland, who came to the store with a lifetime passion for books. With Judy as her mentor, the store has continued to thrive. Island Books is located in Middletown and provides a wide variety of books in many genres. Current fiction is the largest section, with a wide selection of authors, including debut authors who offer fresh, new perspectives. There is also a large Classics section as well. Island Books likes to highlight local authors and local themes including many stories about Newport and it's famous Gilded Age. Children have their own section which offers board books for infants and toddlers, new and traditional hardcover and paperback stories, and books for new readers, middle readers and young adults.
